Rendering Part 3

Rendering the Hair

Like with the shadows of the face, I will block in the hair, then soften it with a tortillon. After that, I model the hair carefully balancing the values.

The shadowed area of the hair is solid. But the lighted area is a pattern of light and dark as the texture of the hair turns toward and away from the light. The planes of the hair receiving full light should not be as light as the areas of the skin, though they should be distinctly lighter than the hair’s shadows, even if not by much.

Rendering the Clothes

Once again, I block things in on the clothing, hit it gently with a tortillon, and I get to modeling them carefully.

Refining the Drawing

From here, it’s a matter of modeling and correcting until the drawing is to my satisfaction.

Of note is that I needed to darken the shadow of the face. I decided it wasn’t contrasting as well as I needed.

For that matter, most areas of shadow needed a little darkening as well.

Final Thoughts and My Self-Assessment

As usual, a little post processing is necessary.

I find this lighting to be interesting. As of yet, I haven’t used a model who face is covered mostly in shadow.

One of the biggest things I needed to get in was the very subtle expression of concentration. The brow of this model furrows slightly as she stares into a computer monitor furtively. I think I accomplished that decently.

And that’s another demonstration of a crosshatched portrait in the portfolio.
