Riverbend – Take II (2)

The underpainting is finished. It’s not perfect, but I’m considering it done.

I continued painting the foliage a variety of greens. As I came forward, I’ve been trying to distinguish the darks of the foreground from that of the background to give the impression of atmospheric perspective.

I kept the reflections in the water one color and value. I’m not sure if I’ve finalized the colors of the trees and bushes yet, which of course will be reflected in the water. And because the reflections don’t need to be distinct, I don’t think I need to worry too much about them at this point.

Self-Critique

A lot of my colors don’t look right to me. I think that I think I should have chosen different colors for my mixtures.

But I don’t want to spend too much time on the underpainting. What I’m going to do is use the underpainting to key the colors that will go on top of it. I’ll correct my mistakes as I continue to paint.

Next time, I will have to remember the mistakes I’ve made in this underpainting and choose better colors.
